Waiver Wire

Waiver Wire for Winners – Week 2

Waiver Wire for Winners is a column to help you sift through the remains following your leagues early week waiver run and take advantage.

Panic is setting in; now is the time to stash talent – Winners don’t panic. Even in the face of whatever we want to call the shit storm that is the NFL right now.

#PDSFootball mantra this week: Injuries + Suspensions = Opportunity

Not just opportunity for handcuffs and 2nd stringers to get touches, but opportunities for Owners to look ahead and use the 2nd waiver run to stash value for later in the season. Come playoff time, while Owners who scramble to pick up Knile Davis and Matt Asiata will, more than likely, be on the outside looking in… a quality high-upside stash (e.g. Josh Gordon) will be sliding into your starting line-up and providing 1st round upside to your playoff roster.

These adds can be lottery tickets (e.g. Josh Gordon) and won’t hit every time, but this column is called “Waiver Wire for Winners” and using your last roster spot on a lottery ticket should never affect your starting line-up.

Using the ESPN 25 Most Dropped this week I’m targeting:

Name Drop % Own %
Markus Wheaton – TDs are coming. As his connection with Big Ben builds his role will expand. The targets are there. -11.3 22.4
Charles Clay – The same people who dropped Antonio Gates before he dropped 25+ points last week are dropping Clay this week. Dumb. -12.4 23.7
Josh Gordon – He is so good he has to be owned. If you have a spot to stash him; do it. Ask Crabtree and Harvin owners how it went last year. (hint: it went well.) -10.2 10.3
Jordan Reed – Another TE that’s been tossed aside. Bye weeks are looming and Reed can play FLEX on 90% of Fantasy Squads. Not as widely available as others, but worth it. -11.5 73
Andy Dalton – One of the best fantasy backups going. Can drop 25 on any week and news about AJ Green has been somewhat positive. Add him, especially if your QB is injury prone. -8.3 72.5

**Kelvin Benjamin (41% owned) and Brandin Cooks (56% owned) have been dropped in tons of leagues. I didn’t include them here because you are a moron if you haven’t already claimed these dudes.**

Keep your eyes on the add/drops in your league, people do crazy shit all the time.

If you remain confident in your teams depth and can take advantage and stash a top-5 round talent in your last bench spot, the payoff can be fantasy glory. The downside? None. Teams rarely play the guys who sit at the end of their bench, but it seems like teams scramble to add players like Brian Quick and Jonathan Stewart like they’re made of gold. I’ll take 4 games from Josh Gordon vs. a season’s worth of these duds any time. If your stash doesn’t payoff, who cares, cut bait. Their’s plenty of Quick’s out there.

As always; hit me up @BigTDobbs to argue about fantasy or to talk anything sports or @punchdrunk.
