Premier League week 29 preview

The second matchday in just a few days is almost upon us and the title race is really starting to heat up. From top to bottom the league is closer than ever and every game is must-win from here on out. Let’s take a look at the games and their odds.

Everton (-147) vs West Ham (+410)

If you’re looking for a game to put some money on an underdog this is the one to do it in. West Ham are coming off a big win against city rivals Tottenham and in general they show up against the bigger teams. Everton are exactly that and they provide a good challenge for the Hammers. This is going to be a good game and I think we’ll see an upset with West Ham winning 2-1.

Manchester City (-480) vs Aston Villa (+1350)

This on the other hand is a game where the underdog is not recommendable to bet on. Villa are by far the worst team in the league and they should have next to nothing to offer against City. I’m not very confident in the Citizens right now but I just can’t find it in me to predict them losing to Villa. City should win this one comfortably 4-0.

Newcastle United (+164) vs Bournemouth (+176)

With the Premier League reaching it’s final stages the relegation battle is getting more and more tense and Newcastle are in the thick of it. They are tied in points with two other teams, albeit with a game in hand to play, and they are desperate for points. They’ll look at this one and think it’s winnable and I agree with that. Bournemouth are more or less safe from relegation so they may put in a little less hunger than the Toons and that could make a difference. I have a little bit of a feeling that Newcastle will end up staying up and I think that they’ll win this one 2-1.

Southampton (-170) vs Sunderland (+525)

I’ve realized as of late that I over-estimate Southampton. It’s become clear that they’re not as good as they were under Pochettino and the style in general has changed quite a bit. That said, Sunderland are a rather poor team and I don’t see them getting a result at St. Mary’s no matter how hard they try so I’m going to go with a 1-0 win for Southampton.

Swansea City (-103) vs Norwich City (+300)

This game is a head to head battle between relegation zone teams and both sides desperately need to get the win, especially Norwich. Neither team is convincing, obviously, but following their 3-1 win over Arsenal and considering home field advantage, I’m going to have to pick Swansea to win 2-1.

Tottenham Hotspur (+138) vs Arsenal (+208)

This is by far the biggest game of the weekend and possibly the biggest game of the season for both teams involved. Not only is this an immensly heated rivalry but they are competing for in a game with major title implications. All things considered I thing Tottenham are without question the more solid team while Arsenal may be the prettier team. When it comes to winning the title solidity trumps beauty any day and Arsenal’s habit of choking can’t be overlooked. I see Spurs winning this game 3-2 and making a major push for the title.

Watford (+195) vs Leicester City (+150)

This is definitely a great chance to make a buck on an underdog as these odds seem crazy to me. The league leaders Leicester go up against 12th placed Watford so how are Watford the favorites? They do have a quality front two but other than that I haven’t seen anything from them that leads me to believe they’ll beat Leicester. I see the Foxes winning 2-0.

Chelsea (-210) vs Stoke City (+620)

This could be a pretty good game as Chelsea have been solid since Hiddink took over and Stoke are as unpredictable as ever. They could go out and blow Chelsea away just as easily as the opposite could happen. The first isn’t all that likely though and I think Chelsea’s solidity will only be stronger at Stamford Bridge and I expect them to win 1-0.

Crystal Palace (+280) vs Liverpool (+105)

Palace vs Liverpool is going to be a contrast of opposite styles. Alan Pardew plays very defensive football based more on not conceding than scoring. They launch the ball out to the wingers and hope than can do something but they essentially have no plan b. Klopp on the other hand loves to play high pressure defense and high speed counter attacking. Liverpool just smashed Manchester City 3-0 and Klopp’s management is clearly starting to kick in and improve the team. That should make them more than capable of beating Palace and I see them winning 3-1.

West Bromwich Albion (+320) vs Manchester United (Ev.)

Manchester United are on a four game winning streak and are finally starting to like a team. They injection of youth into the side has really made a difference and there is an air of positivity among supporters. Although WBA are coming off a good perfomance at King Power Stadium against Leicester there is no doubt that United should be able to get the win. The problem will be whether or not they can break through a Tony Pulis style defense built to park the bus in front of goal. I think they will but I see this being a tedious 1-0 for United.
